Five Second Movie Reviews 7/25 - 8/1/08

[Where [info]boffo reviews films he hasn't seen, so you don't have to]

Step Brothers: Why do people find Will Ferrell acting like an idiot funny? What are we supposed to be entertained by grown men acting like retarded children? I just don't get it.

The X-Files: I Want to Believe: They pulled David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson out of the freezer for this? Boring, doesn't touch on the mythology, has very little to do with the X Files, and could have been a crappy throwaway episode of the TV show.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor: Dumb but fun. Not as fun as The Mummy Returns, which wasn't as fun as The Mummy. But if you liked the first two, this is worth seeing on video at least.

Swing Vote: Harmless. Unlike the 8700 awful political movies to come out in the last few years, this doesn't treat either side as evil or moronic. So the only people it will offend are those who like good movies. Not that it's terrible. There just isn't any reason to see it.

I sometimes used to wonder how Will Ferrell could make so many movies. Then I realized that he's only ever made one, and he just keeps doing it over and over again.

No, he's done two. Stranger Than Fiction was completely unlike anything else he's ever done. But everything else is the same, through and through.

The trailer for Step Brothers looks funny.
I would not go to a theater, but I will get it from Netflix.
I think some of it touches a chord with our childhood.

Have you ever buried anyone alive?

I did that...

Was funny then, and is funny in the trailer too.

I saw The X-Files sequel. It's actually not that bad. Though not that great either, as in something that mostly only fans of the The X-Files will like. They won't be disappointed or feel like Chris Carter ripped them off. But the marketing for the film has been dreadful, and whoever had the idea of opening the film the week after Dark Knight needs to be fired. My only hope is that the film makes enough money to justify making another film, and perhaps, which seems to be Carter's desire, a Millennium film. The next X-Files film could go back to the mythology, which left off with the revelation that the real invasion begins in 2012, when the Mayan calendar ends. That could be compelling, and perhaps give the franchise time to get it right.
